Graphic-Driven Tattooing Rooted in Bold Linework and Colour Discipline

Interview

How did you first get into tattooing, and what motivated you to pursue it as a profession?

From a young age, I was a keen artist, and the art form of tattooing always interested me. Through my portfolio of tattoo designs and artwork, I was offered my first apprenticeship at the age of 18. Unfortunately, at the time I was unable to pursue it. However, sometime later, I was blessed with another opportunity to follow my dream career. I have known from an early age that this is the profession I wanted to grow and develop in.

What have been the most important moments or lessons in your tattoo journey so far?

Having an amazing clientele has been key to my journey. Through their continued support, I was able to branch out and open my first tattoo studio in my hometown. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that the tattoo industry is constantly evolving, and it is essential to adapt to new trends while staying true to your style.

How would you describe your tattoo style and artistic identity in your own words?

My tattoo style is rooted in graphic design. This comes from my love of comic book art and Art Nouveau. I am drawn to bold lines, strong line weights, and vibrant colour. These elements are central to both my tattoo work and my painting practice.

What inspires your work, both inside and outside of tattooing?

My passion for comic-style art has played a significant role in shaping my tattoo work. I have also been inspired by several tattoo artists whom I have admired since the beginning of my career. Outside of tattooing, painting and airbrush art give me another creative outlet to express myself and continue developing as an artist.

Can you describe your creative process when designing a custom tattoo, from concept to execution?

The client and their story are at the heart of my creative process. During the consultation, I gather their ideas and reference material. When they give me the creative freedom to design, we collaborate to create a truly custom piece. Once we are both satisfied with the final composition and flow, we bring the design to the skin.

How do you approach composition and flow to ensure your tattoos work naturally on the body?

During the initial consultation, I carefully trace the desired area of the body and use this as a template to design the tattoo. This ensures that the composition and flow naturally follow the body’s structure and enhance its shape.

What technical aspects are most important to you to ensure clean, long-lasting results?

Designing a tattoo with longevity in mind is extremely important to me. Strong, clean line work and proper saturation of both black and colour are essential to ensure that the tattoo remains readable and vibrant over time.

How do you build trust and communication with your clients throughout the tattoo process?

Consultation and collaboration are key to building a strong relationship with my clients. Taking the time to understand their vision and create a clear blueprint of their desired idea helps build trust. Ensuring the client feels comfortable and relaxed throughout the process leads to better communication and a more positive overall experience.

How do you see the tattoo scene evolving in Ireland and internationally?

Over the last few years, the tattoo industry in Ireland has grown significantly. We have always had inspiring and talented artists, and I believe the scene will continue to evolve as both new and established artists push their creativity and techniques further.

What are your artistic goals or projects you’d like to focus on in the coming years?

I would like to dedicate more time to my art studio, focusing on painting and drawing. I also hope to travel more and work alongside other inspirational artists, continuing to develop and strengthen my tattoo career.
