Illustrative Blackwork & Bold Contrast

Interview

Journey & Background

How did you first get into tattooing, and what made you choose blackwork as your main style?

For several years, I worked as a municipal employee in my hometown. With steady hours and a good amount of free time, my girlfriend encouraged me to pursue something creative. I enrolled in a tattoo course, although it wasn’t the ideal start I had hoped for.

Despite that, I didn’t give up. I began tattooing people who trusted me, starting with simple designs and gradually building my portfolio.

I always knew Blackwork would be my path. Even before tattooing, whenever I drew or chose tattoos for myself, blackwork was the genre that resonated most. It felt natural from the very beginning.

In your 4 years of tattooing, what has influenced your growth the most?

I grow the most when clients give me creative freedom. While I always respect their vision, being trusted to add my own interpretation is when I gain the most experience and produce my strongest work.

Style & Artistic Identity

How would you describe your blackwork style?

I would describe my style as Illustrative Blackwork with a strong focus on dotwork. I work with high contrast and soft stippled shading to create depth and texture.

What attracts you most to blackwork?

Strong contrast allows me to create powerful depth. Using the skin’s natural tone as the brightest highlight against solid black forms creates an immediate and striking visual impact.

Process & Technique

Can you describe your creative process when designing a custom piece?

My process begins with a conversation about the future — whether the tattoo will remain a standalone piece or eventually expand into a larger project like a sleeve. Knowing this from the beginning is essential to ensure proper flow.

For larger projects, I study the body part carefully and create a rough sketch that follows the natural anatomy. I use references to ensure anatomical accuracy and texture precision.

Once the structure is set and I’m given creative freedom, I refine the design with bold outlines, deep black backgrounds, and intentional negative space. I am always grateful when clients trust me enough to evolve their initial idea into something stronger together.

How do you approach composition and flow?

I ensure the design follows the body’s natural movement. Flow is crucial in blackwork, especially when working with bold shapes and heavy contrast.

What technical aspects are most important to you?

Clean, saturated, and consistent linework is essential. I use only pure black ink — I never dilute to create grey tones. High-contrast shading and intentional negative space give the design breathability.

I avoid unnecessary details. A tattoo should be readable from a distance.

Client Experience

How do you approach your relationship with clients?

I manage all bookings and consultations through chat to keep communication organized and transparent. I share the final design one day before the appointment so we can begin the session with confidence.

For me, whether it’s illustrative work or fine line, the approach remains the same: clarity, honesty, and collaboration.

Industry & Vision

How do you see the evolution of blackwork today?

Blackwork has evolved into a vast creative umbrella. It now encompasses diverse subcultures — from ancient traditions like Māori and Polynesian tribal styles to ultra-modern aesthetics like cybersigilism and blackout. It is no longer a single style but a broad visual language.

What are your artistic goals for the coming years?

My main focus is refining my personal signature and making my portfolio a clear statement of a uniquely recognizable style.

I’m excited about my first international guest spot in Miami. My partner and I — she is a professional piercer — plan to continue growing our studio together, traveling, and participating in local conventions.
